SUMMARY:Weather Reports: The Climate of the Future
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Divinity School: Weather Reports \nMonday\, November 22\, 2021\, 7:00pm to 8:30pm \n\n\nKim Stanley Robinson\, novelist\, will present “The Climate of the Future.”\n \n\n\n\nKim Stanley Robinson’s thriller The Ministry for the Future (2020) is science fiction that reads as hard-edged journalism. With short chapters and a myriad of characters\, Robinson creates a kaleidoscope of perspectives on a global climate collapse coming in 2025. Bill McKibben writes “In Kim Stanley Robinson’s anti-dystopian novel\, climate change is the crisis that finally forces mankind to deal with global inequality.” At heart an optimist\, Robinson lays out a possible path to move forward with faith in what we can create together in a post-capitalist world. \nRespondent: Sarah Dimick\, Assistant Professor of English\, Harvard University \nBrian Kirbis of Theasophia will open the conversation with a tea pouring. Each conversation will be conducted online by Terry Tempest Williams\, writer-in-residence at Harvard Divinity School. \nThis series is a Constellation Project in partnership with the Center of the Study of World Religions\, Religion and Public Life\, and the Planetary Health Alliance. \nFor more information\, visit the event page. Registration is required. \n \n\nEvent page \n

SUMMARY:Paris Peace Forum: needed governance of Solar Radiation Modification
DESCRIPTION:Paris Peace Forum 4th edition \nEngineered climate: The needed governance of Solar Radiation Modification  \nSaturday 13 november 2021 15:30 – 16:30 \n\n\nSolar Radiation Modification (SRM)\, a technology still untested but within human reach\, consists of increasing the reflection of incoming sunlight back to space to lower the earth’s temperature. By doing so\, SRM could help reduce major climate hazards\, with the greatest benefits going to the most vulnerable regions. Yet SRM involves serious uncertainties\, risks\, and governance challenges\, including the possibility of undermining critical emissions cuts. This panel will explore the needed conditions for a rigorous\, legitimate\, inclusive\, and balanced discussion on the global governance of SRM. \nSpeakers: Janos Pasztor\, Executive Director\, Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative (C2G); Andrew Parker\, CEO\, The Degrees Initiative (Formerly SRMGI); Kim Stanley Robinson\, Author; Brice Lalonde\, Former Minister of the Ecological Transition\, France\n \n\nEvent page \nYouTube video

SUMMARY:5x15 at COP26 - Arts and the Imagination Hosted by Brian Eno
DESCRIPTION:5×15 at COP26 – Arts and the Imagination Hosted by Brian Eno \n\nJust as we need climate scientists to present the facts\, we need the arts and culture to help us think and feel and talk about the climate crisis at all levels. The conversation needs scientists – but it urgently needs artists too. Science discovers\, Art digests. Art and culture tell us stories about other possible worlds\, lives\, and ways of being. A novel or a film invites us to experience an imaginary world and see how we feel about it. Culture is where our minds go to experiment\, to try out new feelings. \nThis special event on the final day of COP26 features story-tellers\, artists and performers brought together by 5×15 and Brian Eno\, EarthPercent and the Jaipur Literature Festival to explore the role of artists and the arts in responding to climate change. As COP26 draws to a close\, we're looking forward to the road ahead and exploring the power of imagination to drive change – for humans\, for animals\, for flora and fauna\, for soil\, for oceans. \nFeaturing Rosie Boycott\, Brian Eno\, Carolina Caycedo\, Amitav Ghosh\, Kim Stanley Robinson\, Ben Okri\, Charlotte Jarvis\, Mirabella Okri\, Olafur Eliasson\, Emtithal Mahmoud\, Wilson Oryema\, Neil Gaiman and more. Supported by Rathbone Investment Management and Rathbones Folio Prize. \n\n\n\n12 November 2021 \n12pm in Cinema Auditorium \nEvent page at 5×15 \nEvent page at COP26 \nVideo on YouTube

SUMMARY:Climateworks Foundation at COP26
DESCRIPTION:COP26 event: Reimagining climate governance \nNovember 8\, 5-7 pm GMT — online and in-person \n\n\nCOP26 is intended to close a chapter on international climate negotiations as Paris Agreement rules are finalized. At the same time\, with the climate crisis deepening and calls for justice and equity increasing\, many initiatives are bringing new thinking to arrangements that complement the Agreement. For example\, with the Global Stocktake kicking off\, it is a moment for reflection about how the UNFCCC and implementation of the Paris Agreement are evolving.  \nTaking the long view\, there is a gap between where we are headed and where we need to be in 50 or 100 years. Those time spans can be modeled but are hard to contemplate at ground level. Now is the time to understand and plan for what climate politics may look like over the coming decades and how the drive for a just transition could play out against the backdrop of shifting geopolitics and more severe climate impacts.  \nTo help unpack some of these topics\, we invite you to hear from two speakers applying their considerable skills at organizing for action and reimagining the potential of governance to address the climate emergency. Nigel Topping\, COP26 Climate Champion\, is leading efforts to get influential players in the real economy to shift to net zero and complement government action. Kim Stanley Robinson is a bestselling author of speculative fiction whose books have probed the realities of a future living with climate change\, as well as exploring the ways in which society may tackle emissions and adapt.\n \n\nEvent page

DESCRIPTION:The New York Times ClimateHub \nHearts and Minds: Storytelling and Climate Change \nSat.\, Nov. 6 3–3:45 p.m. G.M.T. \n\n\nStories hold a power that science does not: The power to move hearts and minds\, and connect people to a problem. SUMMARY:The Boulder Forum on Economy\, Climate and Community
DESCRIPTION:The Boulder Forum on Economy\, Climate and Community \nKim Stanley Robinson Envisions a Better Tomorrow \nWed. October 7 … noon to 1:30 pm \n\n\nImagining the Path Forward—Finding a Hopeful Story for an Ominous Future with Kim Stanley Robinson – October 7\, 2021 \nKim Stanley Robinson is an award-winning science fiction writer whose novels frequently explore the ways human beings can respond to unique challenges. His most recent book\, ”Ministry for the Future\,” is an epic exploration of potential future human responses to climate change. One of the major themes explored in this fascinating work is how the economy might be redirected to enable a successful de-escalation of climate change. Mr. Robinson will bookend the Economy and Climate Forum by encouraging us to consider our options for the future and how we might find our path to creatively and equitably solve this existential crisis. \nPart 6 of The Boulder Forum on Economy\, Climate and Community\, a six-part webinar series that will explore how we can create an economy in service of an equitable\, livable and sustainable world. Drawing on leaders in fields central to solving both the climate crisis and a series of interrelated crises—energy systems\, material economy/consumption\, ecosystems and biodiversity—the webinars will underscore the focus on the role of the economy in driving these crises as well as its potential role in their solutions.\n \n\nEvent page \nRecap of event \nVideo of event (Vimeo)

SUMMARY:TEDMonterey: The Case for Optimism
DESCRIPTION:TEDMonterey Aug 1-4 2021 \n\n\nThe event: TEDMonterey: Session Zero\, hosted by TED’s Chris Anderson and Helen Walters\, live from the TED World Theater in New York City\, on Wednesday\, July 21\, 2021 \nKim Stanley Robinson\, sci-fi writer \nBig idea: A sci-fi vision of humanity’s triumph over the climate crisis — from the vantage point of the year 2071. \nHow? Coming to us from 50 years in the future\, science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson explains how the 2020s — or the “Terrible 20s\,” as they’ll come to be known — marked a turning point in the climate crisis. Robinson envisions how\, after two global pandemics and a series of deadly international heatwaves\, the world’s nations joined their central banks to form the Network for Greening the Financial System and enacted the “carbon standard.” While it may sound impossible to us in 2021\, the carbon standard created new fiat money “precisely in proportion to the amount of carbon dioxide taken out of the atmosphere.” This dramatic change in fiscal policy made work that helped to heal the planet profitable — like regenerative agriculture\, clean energy infrastructure\, expansion of mass transit\, reforestation and habitat restoration. In hindsight\, Robinson says he can see that people in the 2020s met challenges that no other generation had ever faced\, but\, in his words\, “those people really stepped up.” It’s a rousing vision of how humanity might unite in the coming decades and restore the damage done to Earth’s biosphere.\n \n\nEvent page \nTEDMonterey site \nKSR’s TED talk

SUMMARY:UC Riverside: Science Fiction & Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:University of California Riverside \nScience Fiction & Climate Crisis \n\n\nJoin us for the first event in our free lecture series that explores what science fiction might teach us about real-world problems. \nKim Stanley Robinson – Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of over twenty books\, including the internationally bestselling Mars trilogy\, and more recently Red Moon\, New York 2140\, and The Ministry for the Future.  \nin conversation with \nGerry Canavan – Associate Professor of English (Marquette University)\, journal editor and author of Octavia E. Butler (University of Illinois Press\, 2016)\, among other works. \nModerated by Sherryl Vint – Professor\, UCR (English/Media & Cultural Studies)\, Director of the Speculative Fictions and Cultures of Science Program \nOne of the distinct characteristics of science fiction is that it can tell stories that exceed normal human time scales\, spanning hundreds\, if not thousands of years. It often narrates such stories from nonhuman perspectives\, drawing attention to how human lives are entangled with and dependent upon ecosystems and other species. These qualities make it an ideal genre for grappling with the reality of climate change: how our past contributed to the climate crisis today and how the near-future might unfold\, along one path if we take action or another if we fail to. \nThis series is sponsored by the Center for Ideas and Society\, Speculative Fictions and Cultures of Science Program\, Palm Desert Center\, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC Riverside.\n \n\nTuesday\, April 6\, 2021 at 6:00pm to 7:00pm \nVirtual Event \nEvent page \nReport on event

SUMMARY:Nobel Prize Summit: Our Planet\, Our Future
DESCRIPTION:The Power of Stories: Writing the Future of Our Planet \nJoin us for this prelude to the Nobel Prize Summit as we discuss the way stories have the power to impact our vision of the future. \n\n\nTogether\, we are writing the future of our planet. In the same way that we are living with the deeds and decisions of the past\, the choices made and actions taken by those of us alive today will bear direct impact on the generations who come after we are gone. But how we imagine our future and tell those stories can serve as a predictor of what is to come. As prelude to the first-ever Nobel Prize Summit at the end of April\, Nobel Prize Laureate Martin Chalfie\, screenwriter Joe Robert Cole\, and novelist Kim Stanley Robinson will examine the way in which those stories have the power to impact our vision of the future. \nModerated by Shahzeen Attari\, who researches the factors that motivate action on climate change\, this wide-ranging and eclectic conversation promises to be hopeful\, optimistic\, and above all\, inspiring. \nThis event will be co-hosted by The Exchange and the National Academies’ Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability.
