SUMMARY:Long Now: A Logic For The Future
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Heintz and Kim Stanley Robinson say we live in an “Age of Turbulence.” \nLooking around our geopolitical situation\, it’s easy to see what they mean. Faced with the ever-growing threat of climate change\, the looming potential breakdown of the post-01945 international order\, and the ambiguous prospects of rapid technological changes in fields like AI\, biotechnology\, and geoengineering\, it is clear that we need new answers to new challenges. \nStephen Heintz\, a Public policy expert and president of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF)\, and Kim Stanley Robinson\, one of the most acclaimed science fiction authors writing today\, work in very different fields. But each of them in his own way has sketched out a vision of what we must do to face down the intersecting crises of our time: While their methods may differ\, they align on their conclusions. \nIn their Long Now Talk\, Heintz and Robinson propose what they refer to as A Logic For The Future — a new path for international relations in the face of the chaos of our current age. Over the course of their conversation\, Stephen and Stan drew on a wide variety of historical examples to contextualize our seemingly unprecedented geopolitical moment. In all of these case studies — from the writing of the Atlantic Charter in the darkest days of World War II to the fraught deal-making and relationship-building that allowed for the signing of the Iran Nuclear deal in 02015 — the two focused on the power of human-driven\, almost utopian visions of the future as tools for building a better world. \nNow\, in a moment of geopolitical uncertainty and internal democratic crisis\, Stephen and Stan see space for the kinds of utopian imagination and creativity that were so solely missed in prior moments of flux and chaos. Long-term thinking is key to this kind utopian thinking. In Stan’s words\, the “optimistic” possibilities of long-term thinking are not just useful in dreaming up a better future. They’re “reinvigorating in how we address the problems we face on a day-to-day basis.” \n\nRecorded live on Mar 19\, 02025 at Cowell Theater in Fort Mason Center \nMar 19th @ 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. \n2 Marina Blvd\nLandmark Building C\, Suite 260\nSan Francisco\, CA\n94123 \nEvent page at Long Now \nEvent page at Fort Mason Center \nEvent recording (YouTube) \nEvent recording (mp3 direct link) \nEvent recording (Spotify)

SUMMARY:International Peace Institute
DESCRIPTION:IPI and Perry World House\, University of Pennsylvania\, in partnership with the Permanent Missions of Jamaica and the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations\, cohosted a roundtable discussion on The Declaration on Future Generations: Moving from Vision to Reality\, on April 25th. \nOn September 22\, 2024\, the United Nations adopted the Declaration on Future Generations (DFG) as one of the three main outcome documents emanating from the Summit of the Future. The DFG offers a new lens through which to view pressing global issues and provokes change and acceleration toward future-oriented solutions beyond immediate\, short-term goals. It urges governments to conduct policy and decision making by not only assessing current needs but also taking into account how current actions will impact future generations. \nIn adopting the DFG\, member states committed to leveraging science\, data\, statistics\, and strategic foresight to ensure long-term thinking and planning and to develop and implement sustainable practices and institutional reforms necessary to ensure evidence-based decision making\, while also making governance more anticipatory\, adaptive\, and responsive to future opportunities\, risks\, and challenges. The DFG also called for “enhancing cooperation with stakeholders\, including civil society\, academia\, the scientific and technological community\, and the private sector\, and encouraging intergenerational partnerships by promoting a whole-of-society approach to share best practices and develop innovative\, long-term\, and forward-thinking ideas to safeguard the needs and interests of future generations.” \nThis event explored several approaches proposed or actually taken by governments including the “Design for the Future” movement\, ombuds or ministers for future generations\, and tabletop and computer-based modeling. \nThe roundtable discussion featured speakers including: the American novelist and renowned science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson\, author of The Ministry for the Future; H.E. Brian Wallace\, Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the United Nations; and H.E. Lise Gregoire-van Haaren\, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations. \n\nInternational Peace Institute \n777 United Nations Plaza\, New York \n25 April 2025 \nEvent page \nInterview with KSR following the event (YouTube)

SUMMARY:Kleinman Center for Energy Policy
DESCRIPTION:How will our reliance on fossil fuels today reshape our future? Global efforts like the Paris Agreement and COP26 have set targets to curb emissions\, but the world is still falling short of the action required to mitigate the most deleterious impacts of climate change. \nIn his latest book\, legendary science-fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson imagines a near future where our unsustainable energy system has wrought unimaginable harm. Named one of President Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2020\, The Ministry for the Future uses fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the vivid story of how climate change will affect us all. \nJoin us as Kim Stanley Robinson discusses his new novel and a vision of climate change over the coming decades. Robinson will be joined in conversation by Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein\, Perry World House Professor of Practice of Law and Human Rights at the University of Pennsylvania. \nThis event is part of Energy Week at Penn \nFriday\, April 8\, 2022 | 12:00PM – 1:00PM \nEvent page

SUMMARY:KSR & Brian Eno: A History of Utopia
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to build a liveable future – and who gets to imagine it? \nSince its creation by Thomas More in his 1516 work of political fiction\, the concept of utopia has appeared throughout politics\, philosophy and culture. \nIn this unique collaboration as part of Oxford Ministry for the Future’s two-day takeover of the Schwarzman Centre\, Brian Eno and Kim Stanley Robinson curate a journey through the history of utopian thought – from ancient philosophy to climate fiction and planetary futures. \nEno’s music underscores readings by Kim Stanley Robinson alongside other authors and actors\, creating a performance as reflective as it is urgent. \nPart of Utopia Now!\, a season exploring the role of the arts in making a better future possible. \n\n23 Nov 2026\n19:00\nSchwarzman Centre\, Oxford\nSohmen Concert Hall \nEvent page
