SUMMARY:Recordings @ Reykjavik
DESCRIPTION:The Environment\, the Future and the Future of Writing \n11/09/2015 12:00 – 12:45 \nLocation: Nordic House (Sturlugata 5 Reykjavik 101 IS) \n  \n\n\nScience fiction is a genre that enjoys huge cult popularity\, and its power as a political tool should not be underestimated. Renowned science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson (USA)\, named ‘Hero of the Environment’ by Time Magazine\, depicts the colonization of Mars in the face of ecological disaster on Earth in his Marstrilogy. Icelandic author and environmental activist Andri Snær Magnason’s award-winning novel The Dreamland examines the effects of heavy industry in Iceland. This panel will consider the role of literature in relation to the environmental issues that face all humans in current and future generations. \nThe Environment\, the Future and the Future of Writing: Kim Stanley Robinson & Andri Snær Magnason \nModerator: Óttarr Proppé \nIn collaboration with Reykjavík\, UNESCO City of Literature\n \n\nThe Hard Problem \n11/09/2015 21:00 – 22:00 \nLocation: Iðnó Theater (Vonarstræti 3 Reykjavik 101 IS) \n\n\nIn this very special event\, Kim Stanley Robinson will give a live performance of a radio play that is adapted from his latest science fiction novel Aurora (2015)\, the tale of a voyage between the stars. Robinson created this piece with Marina Abramović and 25 others in a workshop at UC San Diego\, originally intended for use in her performance at the 2015 Venice Bienalle. For this performance\, Robinson will read live as the narrator\, a conscious computer running the starship\, while dreaming passengers on the ship chime in with different voices. The darkened room and soundtrack will create a mystical effect\, taking the audience on a fantastical journey. \nThe Hard Problem: Kim Stanley Robinson and Marina Abramović in collaboration with the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination \nAurora: A Voyage Between the Stars by Kim Stanley Robinson

SUMMARY:Toward A Plausible Utopia @ New Ideas City Museum
DESCRIPTION:Make No Little Plans: A CONVERSATION IN TWO PARTS: Part 1. Toward A Plausible Utopia \n\n\nAs the speed of technological innovation accelerates\, life in the twenty-first century metropolis is coming closer to fulfilling the predictions of science-fiction writers of decades past\, and not always for the best. Many of the most apocalyptic scenarios envisioned by novelists—extreme overcrowding\, conflict driven by climate change\, the crisis of capitalism\, mass uprisings—have also become all too familiar. Could it be that the solutions to today’s challenges are already written? What can architects learn from the wild speculations of their literary heroes? Two of today’s most acclaimed voices from the fields of architecture and science fiction discuss their visions for life in the near-future metropolis. \nBjarke Ingels \nArchitect\, Founder\, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)\, and Cofounder\, KiBiSi Design Group \nBjarke Ingels is renowned for his innovative approach to sustainable development and renewable energy\, and his acclaimed architectural practice\, BIG\, operates within the fields of architecture\, urbanism\, research\, and development. BIG was recently selected as the designer of a $335 million storm defense system to defend lower Manhattan from future floods\, as well as the new Google campus in Palo Alto\, California\, in association with Thomas Heatherwick. \nKim Stanley Robinson\nAmerican science-fiction novelist\nRobinson is best known for his award winning Mars Trilogy (1993–99)\, in which humans\, in light of environmental catastrophe\, are forced to colonize the planet Mars. His books address issues revolving around the imminent warming of our planet as well as the dark sides of capitalism and democracy. He has been invited to speak at multiple fiction and science-fiction conferences as well as the “Rethinking Capitalism” conference at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, in 2011.\n \n\nNew Ideas City Museum\nThe Great Hall at Cooper Union\n7 E 7th St\nNew York\, NY 10003  \nEvent

SUMMARY:Canton Mars @Zurich
DESCRIPTION:»Canton Mars«. A Reading and Conversation with Kim Stanley Robinson \n\n\nIn today’s networked\, real-time society\, we know almost everything about the here-and-now but only a little about what comes next: the future. At the same time\, the speculative exploration of the future is omnipresent. In movies\, computer games\, novels\, and even in the arts sections of newspapers\, we deal almost obsessively with scenarios for tomorrow.Political debates are also fundamentally concerned with questions about the future. Theories and movements that take a more critical view and urge a departure from the current mandate for growth and expansion are more present than ever. Narratives of the future\, which are often dystopian in character\, and myths of the past\, which are predominantly nostalgic\, stand in contrast to one another. \nWhat sorts of stories do we tell each other about the future and why? \nIn his Mars trilogy\, Kim Stanley Robinson describes the colonization of the “Red Planet\,” using this scenario as an opportunity to sketch alter-native proposals for society that develop and evolve in competition with one another. Together with Philipp Theisohn and Markus Schaefer\, Robinson will consider the role of “speculative fiction” and of storytellingas a future technology. \n“Canton Mars“ functions as a projection screen for narratives and myths. It offers a glimpse of Switzerland and the future\, our longing for it and our fear of it. \nKim Stanley Robinson\, Author – the Mars trilogy\nPhilipp Theisohn\, Literary Studies Scholar and Professor of the SNSF Research Project‚ “Conditio extraterrestris\,” Universität Zürich\nMarkus Schaefer\, Architect – Co-Curator of the Salon Suisse 2014 and Partner\, Hosoya Schaefer Architects \nThe discussion will take place in English and is a satellite event of Salon Suisse\, which is organized by Pro Helvetia at the 2014 Architecture Biennale in Venice.\n \n\nTime: September 10\, 2014 at 20:15\nPlace: Seebad Utoquai\, Zurich \nEvent page 1 – Event page 2 – Facebook page – Event flyer \nPress coverage (German)
