SUMMARY:Building the Ministry of the Future
DESCRIPTION:Thu\, 4 March 202118:30 – 22:30 CET \n\n\nJoin us for an exciting discussion with acclaimed science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson and the activist and author Jane Davidson\, on how we get to the future we want — and the type of organisations we need to help us get there. \nKim Stanley Robinson is a bestselling science fiction writer whose work addresses important questions of world-building. The Ministry for the Future\, his latest novel\, is no exception\, wrestling with how to avoid an over-heated world and impending climate catastrophe. \nFormer Welsh Environment Minister\, Jane Davidson shaped the pioneering Well-Being of Future Generations Act\, which put sustainability at the heart of all government decisions. She tells this story in her book #futuregen\, reflecting on Wales’ remarkable response to our global climate issues. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Cat Tully\, the Managing Director of the futures and foresight practice SOIF.\n \n\nEvent registration page

SUMMARY:British Library: Future Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Future Thinking: Kim Stanley Robinson and Roman Krznaric \nMon 29 Mar 2021\, 19:30 – 20:45 \nOnline event \n\n\nHow do we make the world better today for the people of tomorrow? \nDespite the long history of human civilisation\, and everything we have inherited from our ancestors\, we rarely stop to really consider what the future will be like for those who follow us\, and how our own actions now will affect them. Kim Stanley Robinson is one of the world’s most acclaimed science fiction writers\, best known for his Mars trilogy and the ecological\, cultural\, and political themes of his books\, in which scientists often feature as heroes. His most recent novel\, The Ministry for the Future\, imagines how a UN body is set up to fight for the rights of our descendants and how increasingly direct action starts to be used to counter crisis after crisis. Blending stunning\, kaleidoscopic writing with hard fact\, it explores huge challenges but also a truly better world. \nAt this special event\, chaired by award-winning science writer Gaia Vince\, he is joined by leading public philosopher Roman Krznaric\, whose book The Good Ancestor also looks beyond the frenetic short-term thinking of today and uses inspiring examples to show how we might do better by future generations\, just as those before built cathedrals\, or the NHS. \nThe call for long-term thinking grows every day – but what is it\, has it ever worked\, and can we even do it? Join us for an evening of expanded time horizons.\n \n\nEvent page \nRecording on YouTube

SUMMARY:Nobel Prize Summit: Our Planet\, Our Future
DESCRIPTION:The Power of Stories: Writing the Future of Our Planet \nJoin us for this prelude to the Nobel Prize Summit as we discuss the way stories have the power to impact our vision of the future. \n\n\nTogether\, we are writing the future of our planet. In the same way that we are living with the deeds and decisions of the past\, the choices made and actions taken by those of us alive today will bear direct impact on the generations who come after we are gone. But how we imagine our future and tell those stories can serve as a predictor of what is to come. As prelude to the first-ever Nobel Prize Summit at the end of April\, Nobel Prize Laureate Martin Chalfie\, screenwriter Joe Robert Cole\, and novelist Kim Stanley Robinson will examine the way in which those stories have the power to impact our vision of the future. \nModerated by Shahzeen Attari\, who researches the factors that motivate action on climate change\, this wide-ranging and eclectic conversation promises to be hopeful\, optimistic\, and above all\, inspiring. \nThis event will be co-hosted by The Exchange and the National Academies’ Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability. For more Information about the Nobel Prize Summit\, visit the Nobel Prize Summit website: https://www.nobelprize.org/events/nobel-prize-summit/2021\n \n\n  \nDate and time\nWed\, March 31\, 2021\n  \n10:00 PM – 11:00 PM CEST \n  \nLocation \nOnline event \nEvent page \n
