    Early life

He was born in the Areophany team in circa 2036, in Zygote as it was first being settled. He was the nisei ectogene son of Hiroko Ai and John Boone (without John’s knowledge).

one of the earliest members of the Martian underground, he wandered a lot across Mars with the Coyote and embraced Red views. He had fit a stone eyetooth as a recognition sign for Reds. With Coyote, he was responsible for many sabotages against transnational infrastructure in the 2040s-2050s.

During the 2061 revolution he helped rescue many of the First Hundred and bring them to Zygote. He was highly critical of the lack of organization of the revolution.

    Radicalization and death

He was said to be frustrated at the fact that because of the longevity treatment the issei kept the reins of power and did not naturally cede it to the next generation. He became a Marsfirst leader.

He later became even more radicalized and a leader of the Kakaze. He was killed with many Kakaze and long-time friend Dao while trying to take the elevator cable from the UNTA by force at the second revolution.

    Notes

His name means “fire star” in Japanese; this is also the Japanese name for the planet Mars. There is a Martian valley with the same name (Kasei Valles).

  • Jackie

Jackie was an important Martian political leader, the daughter of Kasei and Esther. John Boone was her grandfather through Kasei, and even though she never met him Jackie admired him greatly and she adopted the name Jackie Boone.

    Early life in Zygote

Jackie was born in the Martian underground (probably Zygote) in ca.2077, in a natural birth. She grew up with the ectogene children of Zygote. From very young, she used her beauty and charisma to gather a following and exert power. Peter Clayborne was the only one who was insensible to her charms, which unnerved her greatly particularly because Peter was the only one for whom she had genuine feelings.

Since childhood, she bore an ambiguous relationship of love and competition in leadership with Nirgal. As part of the demimonde, she studied at Sabishii University.

She was an admirer of John Boone, whose work she thoght she continued — though that opinion was not shared by everyone.

    Free Mars leader

She became a charismatic leader of Free Mars and made many friends, lovers and followers along her political career. She helped greatly to prepare the second revolution, though her impatience made her clash often with Maya.

Political career in the Martian government

After the revolution, she became a member of the executive council of the first Martian government. She continued to be the leader of Free Mars during the long years of its super-majority. She took the treatment many times, so much so that she looked like 30 even at an advanced age. She bore a child (the old-fashioned natural way), a daughter Zo, whose father’s identity only Jackie knew. She used Zo as her ambassador in the other planets of the solar system, always trying to extend her sphere of influence and win over territory from Terra.

    Departure from Mars

Her dislike of Terra, her ever-conspiring following and her growing age made her weary of political life. After Zo’s death late in the 22nd century, she accompanied the Dorsa Brevians in a journey away from Mars, on an asteroid world headed towards a new solar system in a star near Aldebaran.

    Notes

In the short story Jackie On Zo in The Martians, Jackie reveals that Nirgal really was the father.

  • Zo

Zoya Boone (“Zo“) was the naturally-born daughter of influential Free Mars politician Jackie (Boone) and therefore the great-granddaughter of John Boone, making her a yonsei. Like her mother, she was fiercely proud of her lineage and held the legacy of John in high esteem.

    Early life

Zo was conceived while Jackie was serving her first term on the first Martian government’s executive council. Jackie was an intentional single mother, withholding the identity of Zo’s father, although there was naturally much speculation on the identity of the father (Antar, Dao, Nirgal, even John Boone himself through the use of biotechnology). She was born circa 2129 in Cairo, where Jackie was for political reasons (not stated but approximated from the text). As the daughter of one of Mars’s most influential political figures, much of the basic care in Zo’s early childhood was offloaded to Jackie’s staff.

She grew up at Dorsa Brevia, where she was impregnated with its matriarchal society based on the Minoan civilization.

    Free Mars agent

She first worked in a feral co-op in Lunae, traveled to the Jovian moons and also taught at Nilokeras University. She was occasionally part of hunting and gathering groups. She enjoyed a good night of sexual encounters in common baths, but even more so enjoyed flying in a birdsuit (a hawksuit), for which she was very skilled.

She joined co-operatives that apart from their commercial activities served as fronts for Free Mars. As part of a mining co-op in Moreux Crater, she acted as an agent for Free Mars, passing subtle messages from her mother to other planets’ and moons’ officials. With the Martian delegation she journeyed many times throughout the entire solar system.

Zo believed in a semi-anarchic political structure for the future of the solar system. She despised the issei, whom she saw as too anchored in their archaic values, outdated in her age. Sax Russell was the only exception in her eyes, as she discovered he had no fixed sociohistorical values. Sax had her take Ann Clayborne with her on a trip to the outer solar system.

    Death

Upon her return from that last trip with Ann in 2181, Zo traveled to the North Sea, south of Boone’s Neck, where she was flying with friends. Going to the aid of a distressed flier, Zo and her companion crashed in the waters near the sea cliffs. Against Zo’s expectations of survival, part of the yonsei culture, they were soon overwhelmed by incoming waves and slammed against the coastal cliffs.

    Notes

According to the short story Jackie On Zo in The Martians, Jackie admits that Nirgal was indeed Zo’s father.

She was instrumental in the organization of the Dorsa Brevia Conference of the Martian underground of 2107 and was one of the most active persons in the drafting of the Dorsa Brevia declaration.

As a result, she was equally active in the Pavonis Mons Congress which resulted in the drafting of the Martian constitution. She was candidate for the executive council of the first Martian government, however she took the position of council secretary and protocol chief under the impulse of Nadia Cherneshevsky. Following the ratification of the Constitution, she published some worknotes and commentary.

She went on to become a renowned and influential historian. In a dense and multi-volume seminal work written and published in the 2170s, an “analytical metahistory” as she called it, she introduced the idea of clashing elements in progressive socioeconomic systems as a prism through which historical progress could be seen, each system being the result of a “residual/emergent complex of overlapping paradigms”. She described the system at the time as a mixture of the residual feudalist/capitalist age and the democratic/Harmony age into which humanity was headed through that time’s diaspora or accelerando. This work was greatly commented and discussed.
