A Russian national, she was a renowned botanist before becoming part of the Russian contingent of the Ares mission.

After a short relationship with Raul and Michel Duval during the first years at Underhill, she became the lover of fellow Russian Vlad Taneev. Eventually, along with Ursula Kohl they formed a love triangle or ménage à trois that endured for the rest of their lives.

In the 2030s, she was a chief researcher at Acheron, studying areobotany and creating new plant species adapted to the Martian environment. During this time, she and Vlad began developing ideas of an economic system that would be inspired by biology: eco-economics.

After the failure of the 2061 revolution she moved to Zygote. With the Martian underground, she and Vlad had the opportunity to fully mature their theories on eco-economics and put them to the practical test. Thanks to the help of the Coyote, the resulting gift economy became the chief economic system of the underground. Vlad and Marina used the lessons learnt from the gift economy to incorporate aspects of eco-economics in the Martian constitution and the legislature of the Martian government following the independence revolution.

She went on to live in Acheron and was a key player in turning it once again into one of the biggest complexes of research laboratories on Mars.

Late in the 22nd century, after Vlad’s death, she moved to Odessa with Ursula. She continued to dwell in Acheron from time to time.

  • Desmond Hawkins

Desmond Hawkins, often known as The Coyote was a stowaway in the Ares and was thus the unofficial hundred and first member of the First Hundred. An eternal anarchist, he was the most traveled man on Mars and his elusive nature made him the stuff of legend.

    Pre-Mars life

Desmond was born circa 1980 in Trinidad and Tobago. He was a devoted anarchist and deeply political from his younger years. He closely befriended with Hiroko Ai in Cambridge. Hiroko freed him from a Trinidad jail, got him to Japan and from there to space as a construction worker for the Ares construction space station. Then she secretly boarded him on the Ares.

    The Coyote of Mars

During the voyage out and during the settling of Underhill, he was taken care of by Hiroko’s farm team. All the while he was preparing for when the Areophany would take off on its own, setting secret outposts and traveling on a secret rover. From very early on, he became the most traveled man on Mars, and a myth on the surface.

With Kasei and other Areophany children, he conducted sabotages on transnational installations. He contacted John Boone who was investigating on them.

The First Revolution and the Underground

He was the one who began the first revolution in Nicosia. After the revolution, he was a major player of the underground. He helped shape the economy of the underground by applying Vlad Taneev’s ideas on eco-economics and the gift economy. He was the genetic father of Nirgal. After the burning of Sabishii, he looked for Hiroko everywhere and eventually gave up on believing on her survival. He often cooperated with the Reds or the Kakaze.

    Later life

He was opposed to any form of government, even to the Martian government after the second revolution. Even late in his life, as an eternal nomad and anarchist, he enjoyed a good drink and making love through the night.

Arkady Nikelyovich Bogdanov was an important member of the First Hundred.

    Pre-Mars life

Arkady was born in Russia (Ugoly) and sported a characteristic red beard throughout his life. From old, he was a devoted revolutionary. He managed to lie in the tests to get admitted into the First Hundred.

    The Ares voyage

During the Ares journey, he was responsible for running the simulations for landing and other manoeuvres the First Hundred were expected to excel at. Through endless repetition and simulating multiple systems failure, he was harsh in their training and did not attempt to make the experience pleasant.

He announced to the rest of the First Hundred that they no longer had to follow instructions from Terra, that they were free to build their own agenda. His leadership abilities became evident and he acquired a following. In the terraforming debate that ideologically divided the colony between Reds and Greens, Arkady’s position was that they would simply do as they liked, not as the Terran authorities decided to do. His open and direct speech was not appreciated by all, and he was accused by some of the colonists as being the cause for the rising tensions within the group.

    Phobos base and Underhill

With his team he was assigned the task to build the first base on Phobos. He secretly put in place a remote-controlled guidance system that would be able to put Phobos out of its orbit. During those first years he and Nadia Cherneshevsky communicated through radio when he was on Phobos and she was at Underhill, and eventually they became lovers.

They both manned the dirigible Arrowhead on a mission to spread the windmills designed by Sax Russell’s team. When he discovered the windmills were illegally and secretly carrying genetically engineered algae created by Sax and Vlad Taneev, he was confused that he was not made aware of that secret plan before and realized that other Terra-defying agendas were at work besides his own.

    Political career

Arkady had a vision for a revolutionary new Mars society based on anarchy. In the decades that followed he prepared a revolution in secret, allying many of the freshly arrived immigrants to his cause. He urged his followers to stash weaponry and infrastructure and to go into hiding, to disappear from under the radar and to be ready for the day. One of his close associates was Mikhail Yangel. He was a friend of John Boone with whom he discussed his ideas.

    The First Revolution and death

He was a leader of the 2061 revolution. He believed in its success until his last breath, when he was killed in the destruction of Carr by UNOMA forces.

    Legacy

His ideas had a lasting influence on the Martian underground. His followers were the Bogdanovists. The underground city of Bogdanov Vishniac was built around Bogdanovist concepts of architecture.

  • Da Vinci

Da Vinci began as a refuge for the terraforming team of Sax Russell in the years following his capture and leading up to the Second Martian Revolution, afterwards becoming an elite scientific co-op laboratory on the shore of Chryse Gulf.

    Prelude to the Second Revolution

After Sax was rescued from Kasei Vallis and his subsequent rehabilitation, he reformed his terraforming group from Echus Overlook at Da Vinci crater, located southeast of Underhill on the outskirts of Valles Marineris. Sax and his team worked in secret, preparing for the trigger event on Earth that would mark that beginning of the Second Revolution. Much of this work was kept secret even from the remaining First Hundred.

Notable achievements by the Da Vinci team included the removal of surveillance and weapon satellites by missile strike at the start of the revolution, the disruption of an orbital insertion maneuver carrying Transnat security forces by launching space debris directly into its path, and supplying face-masks to the refugees from Burroughs that removed CO2 from the air.

    After the Revolution

Later, the Da Vinci team removed the soletta and annular mirror from Mars orbit in exchange for Ann Clayborne brokering a cease fire with the Kakaze, despite the fact that it would slow the progress of warming Mars.

Once independence appeared guaranteed, Da Vinci stopped operating in stealth mode and began administering Martian space in conjunction with the Swiss. The scientists located there began to turn their efforts back to terraforming in an effort to offset the loss of the soletta. Also, on instructions from Sax, they began to synthesize Ann Clayborne’s DNA so Sax could secretly administer the longevity treatment to her.

Da Vinci had a delegation that participated in the Pavonis Mons Congress, and elected its representatives to the global legislature on a random basis. The mathematician Bao Shuyo eventually moved to Da Vinci from Dorsa Brevia, where she became one of the rising stars in string theory and plasma physics.

Eventually, with the thawing of the great Northern Ocean, Da Vinci was situated on a peninsula surrounded by fjords and jutting into the Chryse Gulf. Sax Russell spent a great deal of time hiking there, and likened the scenery to that of the west coast of Ireland.
